Despite an ethos of connection and environmental literacy, environmental education can reinforce colonial norms. EE may emphasize conservation approaches that separate Indigenous people and local communities from the landscape or discourage the application of Indigenous knowledge and lifeways. Conservation norms and environmental education may also ignore or lack knowledge of the very long history of Indigenous land relationships prior to European settlement on this continent. This hosted discussion invites mutual support and reflection on personal and professional practice in EE to recognize the influence of colonial perspectives and disentangle practice from these patterns.
